Introduction

This page describes the context in which the Janis Joplin website was developed. It also briefly covers the technical aspects and tools used.

User Interfaces: Integrating the theory

I developed the Janis Joplin website in the context of the User Interfaces course I read at the University of Teesside during my BSc. The purpose of this course was to give students elements of thinking in regard with the conception of user interfaces. This website was realised in order to apply these considerations. So, more than a simple technical exercice, this website is more than all a mine of good design practices.

Studied User interface aspects were:
- Perception of users
- Memory requirements (people memeory needs, not computer’s...)
- Cultural and society aspects
- Interactions (including feedbacks)
- Needs & Requirements
- Conceptual design
- Principles of good usability design
- Usability heuristics
- Usability testing
- User Interface evaluation
- ...

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX

Technically, the website was built using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX. This one generated HTML 4 pages, with an attached CSS 1 style sheet. Advanced features of this web development studio were used, notably its useful template system, or the assets manager.

Graphics were created using Macromedia Fireworks MX, a web image creation tool from the creator of Dreamweaver. Pictures were also retouched and optimised (galleries items using the batch tool) by this last.
